The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has called for a more inclusive approach to digital transformation in education in Nigeria, urging young people to take a leading role in shaping solutions that promote equality and expand access to learning opportunities.

The call was made on Wednesday, May 14, during the Second Regular Session of the Premiere Academy International Model United Nations (PAIMUN) 2026 General Assembly, held at the UN House in Abuja.

The conference, themed “Digital transformation of the educational sector as a driver of sustainable development,” brought together student delegates who simulated global diplomacy and debated practical solutions to challenges in the education sector.

Speaking at the event, the UNFPA Nigeria Country Representative, Muriel Mafico, encouraged participants to see themselves as future leaders capable of designing innovative solutions that reach marginalised children and bridge global inequalities.

She told the students that the world they are simulating today is the same world they will be expected to lead tomorrow, urging them to become innovators who create solutions that reach the “last child” and diplomats who foster unity in a divided world.

Ms Mafico, who represented the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator A.I. in Nigeria, Elsie Attafuah, also stressed that digital transformation in education must not deepen inequality but instead serve as a tool to eliminate it.

She emphasised the need for inclusive access to digital learning tools, noting that no child should be left behind in the evolving education landscape.

The Model UN conference at the UN House Abuja provided a platform for students to engage in policy simulations, representing different countries and negotiating solutions to global issues, particularly in education and development.

Organisers said the programme is designed to equip young people with leadership, diplomacy, and problem-solving skills needed to address real-world challenges in the future.
