The United Kingdom government has officially announced the appointment of Mr. Peter Vowles as the next British High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Vowles, a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience across Africa and Asia, will succeed the outgoing High Commissioner, Dr. Richard Montgomery CMG, who has been steering the UK’s diplomatic mission in Abuja.
According to an official press release from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), Vowles is scheduled to officially assume his new diplomatic duties in September 2026. Until his arrival, Dr. Montgomery will continue to serve in his current capacity to ensure a seamless transition of leadership and maintain ongoing bilateral initiatives between the two nations.

Peter Vowles brings a formidable wealth of international experience to Abuja, having served in various critical diplomatic and developmental roles over the last two decades. Most recently, from 2023 to 2026, he served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Harare, Zimbabwe, giving him deep, contemporary insights into regional African politics and socioeconomic dynamics. His earlier career in Africa also includes a pivotal stint as the DFID Country Director in Kenya between 2016 and 2018, as well as a role as Deputy Country Director in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Vowles’ impressive diplomatic portfolio spans beyond Africa. He previously served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Yangon, Myanmar during a highly sensitive transition period from 2021 to 2022, and as the FCDO Transformation Director. He has also successfully managed complex governance and health portfolios in volatile regions, including serving as a Governance and Security Team Leader in Afghanistan in 2006, and working extensively on health and population advisory tracks in Bangladesh and India.
With a career that effectively began in the education and development sectors of Zimbabwe back in 1992, Vowles’ return to a major African station underscores the UK’s strategic focus on reinforcing its partnership with Nigeria.
