In a significant boost to Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts, the Defence Attachés of the United Kingdom and Germany conducted a high-level visit to the Headquarters of the Theatre Command, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), on Wednesday.
The visit marks a deepening of international military ties as the Nigerian Armed Forces continue their campaign to stabilize the North East.
Strengthening the UK-Nigeria Security Alliance
During the visit, the UK Defence Attaché, Brigadier General Tom Harper, emphasized the “enduring relationship” between the two nations. He praised the Nigerian military for its resilience and noted that the partnership is built on a shared commitment to the rule of law and human rights.
“The UK remains committed to providing critical training support through the British Military Advisory Team (BMATT) to ensure Nigerian troops are equipped for the evolving demands of the frontline,” Harper stated.
Expanded Regional Cooperation
The German Defence Attaché, Colonel Boris Bovecamp, highlighted a shift toward broader strategic assistance. His remarks centered on capacity building and the potential for regional cooperation arrangements to dismantle terrorist networks more effectively.
Bovecamp noted that his presence in the Theatre was specifically to identify “possible areas of future collaboration” that would enhance operational effectiveness across the region.
A Call for Technical and Logistic Reinforcement
Responding to the international delegation, the Theatre Commander of OPHK, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, expressed his gratitude for the existing support. He credited international training initiatives with significantly sharpening the skills and proficiency of Nigerian troops.
Looking ahead, the Commander identified three pillars for future partnership technical expertise to counter sophisticated threats, advanced equipment procurement, and enhanced logistics support to maintain operational momentum.
The visit concluded with a formal signing of the visitors’ register and the exchange of souvenirs, symbolizing a unified front against global terrorism. The delegation reaffirmed that the defeat of insurgency in Nigeria is a shared priority for the international community.
