President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) following the Senate’s confirmation of its members on December 16.
The reconstituted board is headed by Dr. Mulisiu Olalekan Oseni as Chairman, with Dr. Yusuf Ali appointed as Vice Chairman. Their appointments took effect from December 1, 2025, in line with the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2023.
Dr. Oseni began his service at NERC in January 2017 as a Commissioner and later rose to the position of Vice Chairman. His appointment as Chairman will run until the completion of his ten-year tenure at the Commission, as stipulated by law.
Dr. Yusuf Ali, who was first appointed as a Commissioner in February 2022, now assumes the role of Vice Chairman. His tenure in the new position will last until the end of his first term on the Commission.
Other members of the reconstituted board include Mr. Nathan Rogers Shatti and Mr. Dafe Akpeneye, both serving second terms after their initial appointments in January 2017. Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello is also serving a second term, having first been appointed in December 2020.
Dr. Chidi Ike, first appointed as a Commissioner in February 2022, continues his service on the board, while Dr. Fouad Animashaun joins as a Commissioner for his first term, effective December 2025. Dr. Animashaun is an energy economist with extensive experience in Nigeria’s power sector and previously served as Executive Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
President Tinubu has charged the reconstituted board to deepen and consolidate ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s electricity sector. He urged members to carry out their responsibilities in strict adherence to the letter and spirit of the Electricity Act, 2023, as the administration continues efforts to strengthen regulation, improve service delivery, and drive sustainable growth in the power sector.
