President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday received copies of the United Nations’ proposed budget for 2027 at the State House in Abuja.

The seven-volume document was presented to the President by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Professor Jimoh Ibrahim, who also chairs the UN General Assembly’s Budget and Administrative Committee.

Speaking to journalists after the presentation, Ibrahim described the occasion as historic, saying it was the first time in 66 years that a Nigerian President had received the proposed UN budget through the process.

“This is the presentation of the United Nations proposed budget for 2027 that was presented to me by the General Assembly, by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to the Fifth Committee, and that budget has seven volumes,” he said.

Why Tinubu Received the UN Budget

Ibrahim explained that presenting the document to the President was appropriate because Nigeria is a member of the United Nations and he represents the country at the committee responsible for considering the budget.

“So it has to be presented to my country because my country is a member of the United Nations. I share the budget at the committee, so the appropriate thing to do is to bring the budget home and deliver it to the President,” he added.

Ibrahim Highlights 66-Year Milestone

The Nigerian representative said the presentation marked an unprecedented moment in the country’s involvement in the UN budget process, noting that Nigeria had not shared the budget at the committee level in more than six decades.

“This is the first time in 66 years that Nigeria will share the budget in the committee. So I don’t know when we’re going to do that again in history. President Bola Tinubu is making history to have been able to receive that budget, being the first President in 66 years who received such a budget from the United Nations, and it’s not a small issue for a country to receive the whole UN budget.”

The presentation places Nigeria’s role in the UN budget process in focus, with Ibrahim highlighting the significance of bringing the proposed budget to the President for the country’s consideration.
