President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening global partnerships and promoting peace as he received Letters of Credence from 17 ambassadors and four high commissioners at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Speaking at the brief ceremony held inside the Council Chamber, President Tinubu assured the newly accredited envoys that Nigeria remains open to deeper diplomatic engagement across economic development, security cooperation and cultural exchange. He urged them to work closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and take advantage of his administration’s open-door policy.
“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I warmly welcome you to the State House,” the President said. “Your accreditation today reaffirms the depth of our bilateral ties and our shared commitment to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Nigeria values its longstanding friendship with nations across all regions of the world.”
Tinubu noted that the government is prioritising reforms aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, improving the investment climate and accelerating sustainable development. He encouraged the diplomats to explore opportunities in trade, energy, agriculture, technology, education, and defence cooperation.
“The global community faces evolving challenges security threats, climate pressures, economic instability and humanitarian issues. Nigeria is ready to work closely with your governments to promote peace, stability and prosperity,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the envoys, Japan’s Ambassador, Suzuki Hideo, described the moment as historic and commended President Tinubu’s leadership. He praised the administration’s economic reforms, security efforts and Nigeria’s role in stabilising ECOWAS.
“We are honoured to present our Letters of Credence today. It is a new chapter in deepening relations with Nigeria,” Ambassador Hideo said. “Your bold reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal framework and attract investment are highly recognised. Nigeria stands as a beacon of resilience and promise.”
Countries represented included Japan, Chad, Gabon, Türkiye, Palestine, Spain, Indonesia, Mauritania, Austria, Thailand, Bangladesh, Sweden, Czech Republic, Liberia, Ghana, India, Poland, Italy, Slovakia, Iran and Barbados.
The envoys are expected to begin their diplomatic assignments immediately.
