President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday officially decorated Olatunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), charging him with the immediate mandate to restore peace and strengthen security across the federation.
The ceremony, held at the State House, marks a transition in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force following the retirement of Kayode Egbetokun. The appointment is currently awaiting ratification by the Nigeria Police Council, scheduled to meet next week, and subsequent Senate confirmation.
A Mandate for Transformation
President Tinubu underscored that the appointment comes at a “critical moment” for the nation. He specifically directed the Acting IGP to focus on rebuilding public confidence in the police force and enhancing synergy with other security agencies to combat rising internal threats.
“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” the President stated during the ceremony.
He further urged Disu to uphold the Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing that the safety of lives and property must remain the administration’s highest priority.
President Cites Proven Track Record
Reflecting on their previous professional relationship, President Tinubu noted that his choice was informed by Disu’s performance during the President’s tenure as Governor of Lagos State.
“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record,” Tinubu said. “I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos… Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level, and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority.”
Assuring the new police chief of the presidency’s backing, he added: “It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support.”
Tribute to Outgoing IGP Egbetokun
The President also took a moment to commend the outgoing Inspector-General, Kayode Egbetokun, describing Nigeria as a grateful nation for his service in maintaining law and order.
In a poignant remark on leadership transitions, Tinubu told Egbetokun: “You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy.” He encouraged the retired IGP to remain available to offer strategic advice to the new leadership.
High-Level Attendance
The decoration was attended by a cohort of top government officials and security brass, including Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, and AIG Hakeem Odumosu (rtd)
Also in attendance were the parents and family members of Acting IGP Disu, witnessing what the President described as a pivotal step toward a more secure Nigeria.
