While the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) undergoes rapid infrastructural transformation, a shocking discovery in Karshi, AMAC, has revealed that over 500 children are receiving their education in a facility built entirely of mud blocks.

The LEA Primary School, Sabon Gari-Orida, established in 2008, stands as a stark reminder of the widening gap between the nation’s capital’s development and its rural neglect. Despite the federal government’s significant contributions to the education sector, the community has been forced to sustain its own school for nearly two decades without official intervention.

A Death Trap for Learning

The condition of the school has reached a breaking point. Reports from the ground indicate that the classrooms are in a state of advanced dilapidation, posing a direct threat to the lives of the pupils. Without desks or chairs, children are forced to sit on bare floors, while the structural instability of the mud walls has invited dangerous wildlife into the learning space.

“Pupils sit on bare floors, and the dilapidated classrooms are unsafe, with snakes hiding inside,” stated in the report. “How can a community in the nation’s capital be this neglected?”

Broken Promises and Election Cycles

Residents of Sabon Gari-Orida have expressed deep frustration over what they describe as political tourism. The community alleges that while official presence is non-existent during times of need, the government only appears when it is time to solicit votes during elections.

Despite the Federal Government financing approximately 30% of public sector spending on education, the 500 children in this community have been consistently denied access to a quality, safe, and conducive learning environment.

Calls for Urgent Intervention

An urgent plea has been directed toward the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and the Senator representing the FCT, Ireti Kingibe. The community is demanding an immediate end to the neglect, calling for the government to urgently intervene and build a proper school that meets modern standards.

As the #FixFCTSchools movement gains momentum online, the pressure is mounting on the FCT Administration to prove that development in Abuja extends beyond the city center and into the lives of its most vulnerable citizens.
