In commemoration of the 2026 International Day of Clean Energy, the global organization Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) has launched a massive 24-hour campaign designed to accelerate the transition to renewable power and modern cooking solutions.
The initiative, which was announced on Sunday, includes a series of high-level physical and virtual events spanning Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe. The United Nations General Assembly established January 26 as the International Day of Clean Energy to mobilize global action toward a just and inclusive energy transition that benefits both people and the environment.
As a designated leader for the day’s celebrations, SEforALL is focusing its 24-hour activation on two critical pillars of the energy transition: expanding clean cooking to replace polluting fuels and pioneering new financial models to bring electricity to underserved communities.
Data from the organization reveals a stark global energy gap, noting that over 2.1 billion people still rely on hazardous fuels like firewood and charcoal. This dependence causes deadly household air pollution, fuels deforestation, and accelerates climate change. Additionally, the lack of reliable electricity across Sub-Saharan Africa continues to stifle economic growth and limit access to essential healthcare and education.
In Lagos, Nigeria, the organization is hosting an in-person clean cooking experience. The event brings together policymakers, private sector executives, and community leaders to witness hands-on demonstrations of modern cooking technologies. The goal of the Nigerian activation is to highlight how shifting away from traditional fuels can yield immediate health and economic benefits for the nation.
Parallel to the Lagos event, a high-level summit is taking place in Vienna, Austria. This program focuses specifically on the implementation of clean cooking solutions in schools. Featuring government officials, youth leaders, and international partners, the Vienna event explores how sustainable energy in educational institutions can protect the environment while improving outcomes for millions of children globally.
Furthermore, SEforALL is marking the fifth anniversary of the Universal Energy Facility (UEF). This results-based financing program is expanding electricity access by providing funding once energy delivery is proven. During the celebrations, the organization is set to announce a new initiative, funded by the European Union and the Danish Government, to accelerate private-sector investment in green mini-grids in Sierra Leone.
To ensure global participation, the 24 Hours for Clean Energy digital campaign encourages individuals and businesses to share their commitments to Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) on social media. Using the hashtags #InternationalDayOfCleanEnergy and #CleanEnergyDay, the digital movement aims to create a unified moment of solidarity for affordable and reliable power.
