Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has awarded N20 million each to the best graduating students of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.

Sanwo-Olu announced the cash gifts on Wednesday during LASU’s 29th and 30th Combined Convocation Ceremony at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Main Campus, Ojo.

The beneficiaries are Ayilara Lawal Olawale, who graduated with a 4.96 CGPA in Project Management Technology in the 2024/2025 session, and Adebanjo Samuel Oluolamide, who finished with a 4.97 CGPA in Aerospace Engineering in the 2025/2026 session.

Sanwo-Olu Charges Graduates

Speaking at the ceremony, Sanwo-Olu urged the 20,604 graduands to make the university proud by using their education to contribute meaningfully to society.

“I charge you to be good ambassadors of this great institution, Lagos State and Nigeria. Deploy your knowledge, character and courage to solve problems and contribute meaningfully to society,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu described the ceremony as a special one for him, noting that it was his sixth and final convocation as Visitor to LASU.

“This is my sixth and final convocation as Visitor to Lagos State University. It is therefore both a celebration of LASU’s achievements and, in many ways, my farewell to the university community,” he said.

Governor Highlights LASU’s Growth

Reflecting on the university’s development, the governor said LASU had grown considerably since its establishment more than 40 years ago under the administration of the late Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande.

Sanwo-Olu said the university had recorded progress in areas including student demand, rankings, research and infrastructure.

He also highlighted some of the projects completed by his administration, including the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex, student union building, student accommodation, lecture theatres and halls.

The governor said Lagos had also expanded access to tertiary education by increasing the number of state-owned universities from one to three.

He added that another specialised university focused on medicine and health sciences was in the pipeline.

Sanwo-Olu urged corporate organisations, alumni and philanthropists to support LASU through endowments, scholarships, research funding and infrastructure development.

Dangote, Kekere-Ekun, Adesola Honoured

The ceremony also featured the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on Aliko Dangote, Akin Kekere-Ekun and Bola Adesola.

Sanwo-Olu congratulated the three honorary graduands, describing their careers and contributions to industry, banking and governance as examples worthy of emulation.

He also commended the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, for her contribution to the growth and visibility of the university.

The governor noted that the convocation was also Olatunji-Bello’s final ceremony as Vice-Chancellor, making the event a farewell for both of them.

Chancellor Speaks

Earlier, the Chancellor of LASU, Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, commended the Lagos State Government for its investment in education.

Ogunsanwo, who presided over his first convocation ceremony as Chancellor, urged the graduates to become creators of solutions rather than mere consumers of knowledge.

He encouraged them to apply their education to solving problems and contributing to the development of society.
