Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commissioned the Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hub in Agege, saying the facility is part of efforts to reduce food prices, cut post-harvest losses and create jobs across the state.
The governor commissioned the 7,000-square-metre Lagos Fresh Food Hub at Pen Cinema, Agege, on Wednesday, making it the third mid-level food hub established by the state after facilities in Mushin and Abijo, Ajah.
Hub to Cut Food Supply Costs
Speaking at the commissioning, Sanwo-Olu said the facility was designed to strengthen the link between farmers and consumers by promoting a more direct farm-to-table supply chain.
According to him, the initiative will help reduce the role of middlemen, limit food spoilage and lower the cost of food for consumers.
“The commissioning of this Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hub in Agege is not simply the unveiling of another piece of infrastructure. It is the physical expression of a larger vision, one that places food security at the heart of our development agenda,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He added that the state’s network of agro-produce hubs would help reduce food supply chain costs, cut post-harvest losses and create thousands of jobs.
Sanwo-Olu said the facilities were also intended to create opportunities for farmers, investors, traders and other players in the food sector.
Mushin Hub Records ₦4bn Transactions
The governor cited the Fresh Food Hub in Mushin as an example of the impact of the initiative.
He said the Mushin facility, commissioned in December 2023, had recorded more than ₦4 billion in transactions across 228 market days, with over 850 registered vendors.
According to him, the facility has also created more than 7,000 direct and indirect jobs.
“Well-designed market infrastructure does far more than provide a place to sell food: it improves farmers’ incomes, reduces post-harvest losses, creates jobs, and strengthens local economies,” he said.
Epe Food Hub Nears Completion
Sanwo-Olu also disclosed that work on the Lagos Central Food Systems and Logistics Hub at Ketu-Ereyun, Epe, was at an advanced stage.
He said the flagship facility, which will feature cold and dry storage facilities, processing and repackaging centres, quality-control laboratories, warehouses, logistics bays and digital trading platforms, is expected to be completed before the end of his administration.
According to the governor, the hub is designed to become the largest food logistics hub in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the capacity to service more than 1,500 food trucks daily and handle over 1.5 million metric tonnes of food annually.
He said the central facility would work alongside the network of mid-level hubs to improve food distribution across Lagos.
Agege Hub to Serve Neighbouring Communities
Sanwo-Olu said the Agege facility was strategically located to serve residents of Agege and surrounding communities while strengthening the wider food distribution network.
He said the hub provides space for traders and includes dry and cold storage facilities, a dedicated seafood section, parking and electric vehicle charging points.
“Today, we proudly add Agege to that network. This Hub is strategically located to serve Agege and its neighbouring communities, while strengthening the wider food-distribution network across Lagos,” he said.
The governor urged farmers, traders and aggregators who will operate from the facility to take ownership of the project and ensure its success.
