In a landmark move toward medical self-sufficiency, PVAC hosted a high-level strategic meeting with Caring Cross, an international non-profit dedicated to advancing cell and gene therapies. The engagement, held on May 5, 2026, focused on unlocking transformative healthcare solutions and establishing Nigeria as a hub for advanced biotechnology in Africa.

Breaking Barriers in Specialized Medicine

The primary objective of the meeting was to bridge the gap between cutting-edge medical innovation and local accessibility. By collaborating with Caring Cross, PVAC aims to facilitate technology transfer and initiate local manufacturing of gene therapies.

This initiative targets high-priority disease areas that heavily burden the Nigerian population, including:

  • HIV/AIDS

  • Sickle Cell Disease

  • Leukemia

Currently, these treatments are often prohibitively expensive and performed primarily abroad. Localizing production is expected to drastically reduce costs, making life-saving cures accessible to millions of Nigerians who previously lacked options.

The Roadmap to Implementation

To ensure the success of this ambitious venture, “we will define the next steps to support the implementation,” PVAC stated, outlining a comprehensive strategy to move from dialogue to action. The organization committed to defining the next steps for implementation, focusing on three critical pillars:

  1. Regulatory Framework: Establishing an enabling environment to streamline approvals for advanced therapies.

  2. Infrastructure Development: Ensuring that local facilities meet the rigorous global standards required for gene therapy production.

  3. Strategic Partnerships: Strengthening ties between the private sector and international stakeholders to secure long-term investment.

As Nigeria moves toward this new frontier, the synergy between PVAC and Caring Cross signals a bold commitment to eradicating chronic diseases through localized, innovative science.
