President Bola Tinubu on Monday officially swore in Mr. Taiwo Oyedele as the Minister of State for Finance, marking a significant transition for the man who has spent the last year spearheading Nigeria’s ambitious tax overhaul.
The ceremony, held at the Presidential Villa, elevates the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms to a cabinet-level position. President Tinubu described the appointment as a direct reflection of Oyedele’s professional excellence and his “unwavering dedication” to national service.
A Mandate for Economic Growth
During the brief ceremony, President Tinubu emphasized that Oyedele’s deep expertise is essential for navigating the current economic landscape, which he characterized as stable but in need of a major spark.
“This is additional responsibility… It is a very challenging job because we look at the fiscal policy and responsibility that come with it at the time that economic stability is being experienced, but without exponential growth,” the President stated. “It’s always very difficult, but you are fit to be there.”
The President further lauded Oyedele for his work in dismantling obsolete tax structures that he claimed were fundamentally opposed to progressive governance. He noted that the new Minister’s efforts would be pivotal in expanding the revenue base and fostering a business-friendly environment across the federation.
The Journey to the Cabinet
Oyedele, a native of Ikaram, Akoko, in Ondo State, brings a formidable resume to the Ministry of Finance. His career is defined by high-level academic achievement and over two decades of private-sector leadership, Spent 22 years at PwC, rising to Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader, Alumnus of Yaba College of Technology, Oxford Brookes, and executive programs at Harvard, Yale, and LSE, and Professor at Babcock University and visiting scholar at Lagos Business School.
A Call for Family Support
In a lighter moment during the ceremony, the President turned his attention to the Minister’s wife, acknowledging the personal sacrifices required for high-level public office.
“I congratulate your wife for standing up to our challenge of time management and long hours of absence,” Tinubu said. “I hope you will encourage and support him.”
With this appointment, the administration signals a continued focus on fiscal discipline and the modernization of Nigeria’s financial architecture as it seeks to translate stability into tangible prosperity.
