In a decisive step toward industrializing Nigeria’s vast mineral wealth, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has overseen the signing of a transformative agreement between the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and the Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF).
The partnership aims to jointly fund three major strategic initiatives, headlined by the establishment of a massive $1.3 billion alumina refinery. This move is expected to position Nigeria as a key player in the global mineral processing value chain.
A Multibillion-Dollar Boost for National GDP
The agreement represents a shift from the mere extraction of raw materials to in-country value addition. By processing minerals locally, the government intends to retain a larger share of the wealth generated by the sector.
The $1.3 billion investment is projected to serve as a catalyst for economic stability, focusing on job creation, technology transfer, and foreign exchange viability Over Rhetoric
Speaking on the significance of the deal, Dele Alake emphasized that while the financial figures are impressive, the long-term sustainability of the projects is the ultimate priority for the administration.
“This means jobs, technology, foreign exchange, and real contribution to our GDP over the long term,” Alake stated during the signing ceremony. “The numbers are strong, but what matters more is viability. This is how we grow mining’s real contribution to our economy.”
Capitalizing on Natural Wealth
The collaboration between the AFC and SMDF marks a new era of serious capital injection into a sector that has historically been underfunded. By aligning international finance with national development goals, Nigeria is moving to de-risk its mining projects and attract further global investment.
“We have the minerals,” Alake added. “With this partnership, we are putting serious capital behind developing them properly.”
The initiatives under this agreement are expected to set a new standard for how Nigeria manages its natural resources, ensuring that the Solid Minerals sector becomes a primary driver of the nation’s economic diversification.
