The 2026 Healthcare Federation of Nigeria (HFN) conference has pivoted toward a “buy local” strategy to fix the nation’s fragile medical supply chain. Experts and stakeholders gathered to discuss shifting from import dependency to a self-sustaining model centered on local manufacturing and strategic financing.
Strengthening the Healthcare Supply Chain
A core focus of the deliberations was the implementation of pooled procurement, a strategy designed to aggregate demand and reduce the cost of essential medicines. By leveraging collective buying power, the initiative aims to make quality medical products more affordable for the average Nigerian while ensuring a steady supply for healthcare providers.
The Push for Local Self-Reliance
Panelists argued that Nigeria’s path to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is blocked by a heavy reliance on foreign medical imports. To bridge this gap, the conference highlighted local manufacturing by building domestic capacity to produce drugs and medical devices to ensure national health security, supply chain financing by creating financial bridges for distributors and manufacturers to eliminate bottlenecks in delivery, and tax reforms to address fiscal policies to incentivize private sector investment in the health space.
The Power of Collaboration
The transformation of the sector is being framed as a multi-stakeholder effort. Speakers emphasized that neither the government nor the private sector can achieve these goals in isolation. Instead, a synergy between government policy, private sector innovation, and investor capital is required to turn high-level policy into measurable impact.
Mrs. Njide Ndili, President of the Healthcare Federation of Nigeria (HFN), emphasized that the shift is no longer optional.

“Nigeria’s healthcare challenge is no longer just about policy intent, but about how we sustainably finance quality care at scale,” she stated, noting that with declining foreign aid, the private sector must step up to fill the gap.
A Foundation of Quality and Innovation
Under the theme “Transforming Healthcare Financing: Leveraging Private Sector Innovation to Achieve Quality Outcomes and Universal Health Coverage,” the summit reinforced that quality must be the foundation of trust in the Nigerian healthcare system. The discussions serve as a roadmap for moving beyond theory into actionable solutions that provide every Nigerian with access to life-saving medical products.
