The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has congratulated Actress and Producer Funke Akindele on the blockbuster success of her film “Behind The Scene” (BTS), which has grossed over ₦2.4 billion and continues to draw audiences nationwide.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by NFVCB Executive Director and CEO Dr. Shaibu Husseini, the Board praised Akindele for setting a new benchmark in Nigerian cinema and solidifying her position as one of the industry’s leading figures. The Board noted that her consistent box office dominance, now spanning four consecutive years, reflects not only creative excellence but also a keen understanding of audience engagement and the evolving dynamics of film production, distribution, and exhibition in Nigeria.
The NFVCB reaffirmed its commitment to recognising and rewarding achievements that promote the growth and sustainability of the Nigerian audiovisual sector. As part of this recognition, the Board plans to honour Funke Akindele with a Box Office Queen Award for 2023, 2024, and 2025. The award ceremony will include the Honourable Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, alongside top female executives, with arrangements being made to accommodate Akindele’s schedule.
The Board also commended Actress and Director Toyin Abraham on the box office success of her directorial debut, Oversabi Auntie, which has grossed over ₦1 billion. NFVCB described the achievement as historic, noting that the film now ranks among the top four highest-grossing Nollywood films and marks a strong start to Abraham’s directing career.
According to NFVCB, the success of Oversabi Auntie highlights Abraham’s versatility, growing creative influence, and the expanding opportunities for filmmakers who are redefining storytelling and audience connection in contemporary Nollywood.
“We at the NFVCB congratulate both filmmakers on their respective milestones. Their achievements are strong indicators of the Nigerian film industry’s continued growth, resilience, and global promise,” Dr. Husseini concluded.
