The Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has commenced the distribution of vital relief materials to residents displaced and affected by recent banditry attacks in the Alawa and Bagna communities of Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State. The humanitarian intervention, which took place at the Mutum Daya community, was designed to bring immediate succor to households grappling with the aftermath of violent disruptions.
Led by the NEMA Minna Operations Office, the exercise was executed in close collaboration with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) and various security formations. Officials confirmed that the emergency relief package was directly approved by the Federal Government to cushion the economic and emotional hardship inflicted on the agrarian communities by the attackers.
Strategic Relief Distribution to Impacted Households
During the flag-off of the distribution exercise, the Head of the NEMA Minna Operations Office, Mr. Hussaini Isah, emphasized that the agency’s primary objective was to reduce the vulnerabilities of the victims.
“This intervention is aimed at providing immediate humanitarian support to affected households and easing the hardship experienced as a result of the attacks. We urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies for prompt action.”
In addition to addressing the immediate conflict-induced crisis, Isah utilized the gathering to issue a critical early warning regarding impending weather hazards. Citing the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) by NiMet and the Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) by NIHSA, he advised residents to avoid farming, building, and other activities along waterways and flood-prone areas due to severe flood risks across the country this year.
Transparent Coordination and Community Gratitude
The distribution process was characterized by a high level of transparency, monitored closely by community leaders and anti-corruption watchdogs. Key dignitaries present at the exercise included the Director General of NSEMA, Abdullahi Baba Arah; the District Head of Alawa, Alhaji Ibrahim Salihu; the Village Head of Bagna, Mr. Bitrus Leo; and a representative of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Mr. Shetima Saleh. The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Department of State Services (DSS) provided security coverage to ensure an orderly exercise.
Food items distributed to the vulnerable households included rice, beans, spaghetti, seasoning cubes, vegetable oil, tomato paste, and iodized salt.
Reacting to the deployment of the materials, the District Head of Alawa, Alhaji Ibrahim Salihu, and the Village Head of Bagna, Mr. Bitrus Leo, praised the speed of the government’s intervention. They specifically commended the Director-General of NEMA, Hajiya Zubaida Umar, for her swift response and unwavering commitment to supporting conflict-affected communities, noting that the materials would significantly alleviate the hunger and displacement challenges currently faced by their people.
