A major fire outbreak at a restaurant adjacent to the Federal Ministry of Power Headquarters in Maitama was successfully contained following a swift multi-agency intervention coordinated by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The incident, which triggered concerns due to its proximity to key government infrastructure, began in the early afternoon. NEMA’s Abuja Operations Office received a distress alert at approximately 2:36 p.m., prompting the immediate activation of emergency protocols.
Swift Deployment and Coordination
Upon arrival, NEMA officials spearheaded a collaborative effort involving the Federal Fire Service and the FCT Fire Service. To ensure the situation did not escalate, additional search-and-rescue teams and personnel were deployed from NEMA’s National Headquarters to reinforce the ground operations.
The primary objective of the responders was to isolate the blaze and prevent it from spreading to the Ministry of Power and other neighboring high-profile buildings in the Maitama district.
Resolution
Following over three hours of intensive firefighting and site securing, the operation was officially concluded at 5:45 p.m. While the restaurant sustained damage, no further spread to the Ministry was reported, and the area has been declared safe.
Authorities are expected to conduct a follow-up investigation to determine the exact cause of the inferno.
