In a move to strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, the House of Representatives Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity conducted an oversight visit to the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) headquarters in Abuja this week.
Led by Chairman Hon. Adedeji Stanley Olajide, the delegation emphasized the National Assembly’s commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and robust governance within the nation’s rapidly evolving digital ecosystem. The visit serves as a critical step in aligning legislative action with the federal government’s technological goals.
Strengthening the Digital Framework
The Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, received the lawmakers and provided an extensive briefing on the agency’s strategic priorities. Inuwa highlighted ongoing efforts to drive national digital transformation and the urgent need to fortify cybersecurity frameworks to protect Nigeria’s online interests.
During the session, Inuwa was candid about the hurdles preventing the agency from reaching its full potential. He identified several operational bottlenecks, including regulatory gaps, institutional constraints, and the need for enhanced capacity building to meet the agency’s expanding mandate.
“We are committed to delivering on our national mandate, but addressing these regulatory and institutional challenges is vital,” Inuwa stated during the briefing. “With the right legislative support, we can effectively accelerate the growth of our digital economy and secure our cyberspace.”
A Unified Vision for the Future
The lawmakers responded with a firm commitment to the agency’s mission. Hon. Olajide assured the NITDA leadership that the Committee is prepared to provide the necessary legislative backing to overcome existing hurdles.
The Committee noted that empowering NITDA is essential to achieving the objectives set out in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes innovation and economic diversification through technology.
The visit concluded with a mutual agreement to develop collaborative solutions aimed at strengthening NITDA’s operational capacity, ensuring that Nigeria remains competitive in the global digital landscape.
