The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has made a strong case for increased international investment in Africa’s renewable energy sector, declaring energy security as one of Nigeria’s most critical national priorities. Speaking at the prestigious London Climate Summit, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that global targets for a scalable energy transition cannot be achieved without directing substantial funding toward historically underserved regions. He reminded global leaders that Africa holds 60 percent of the world’s solar potential and houses a quarter of the global population, making it the ultimate destination for impactful green energy partnerships.
Capitalizing on Power Sector Reforms
Closer to home, the Governor highlighted how recent regulatory overhauls in Nigeria’s power architecture have empowered sub-national governments to take charge of their energy futures. According to Sanwo-Olu, these sweeping legislative reforms have unlocked unprecedented opportunities for states like Lagos to actively participate in both power generation and distribution. This policy shift has effectively cleared the path for private capital to flow into local energy markets, positioning Lagos as a prime hub for decentralized energy solutions.
“Recent reforms in our power sector have created new opportunities for states like Lagos to play a more active role in power generation and distribution,” Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated. “Lagos is ready for meaningful collaboration to expand our energy capacity and deliver reliable power to more people.”
Tracking Progress in Decentralized Energy
Demonstrating the state’s proactive approach, Sanwo-Olu shared tangible milestones already recorded through targeted off-grid interventions. Lagos State has successfully catalyzed significant investments in mini-grids, which are rapidly improving electricity access across underserved communities. Furthermore, the administration has successfully deployed over 45,000 solar street lights across the metropolitan state, demonstrating a practical blueprint for scalable, sustainable urban development that the state intends to expand through global collaboration.
