In a decisive move to fortify campus safety, the Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHET) has officially joined forces with the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA).
The partnership was solidified through the launch of an all-inclusive campus activation campaign held at the college premises, aimed at eradicating Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) within the academic community.
A Mandate for Zero Tolerance
The Provost of the College, Professor Raheem Akewushola, speaking through the Deputy Provost (Academics), Dr. Olaronke Agoro, delivered a firm message regarding the institution’s stance on misconduct. He asserted that the college environment must be preserved as a sanctuary for academic excellence, free from the shadows of intimidation or assault.
“The College has zero tolerance for all forms of sexual and gender-based violence. This campus must remain a safe space for learning and growth. This activation is not just about awareness; it is about driving real behavioural change and ensuring survivors are supported and heard,” Professor Akewushola stated.
He further challenged the student body to transition from passive observers to active protectors of the community, urging them to speak up and stand strong against any form of abuse.
Empowering Students as Ambassadors
The Executive Secretary of DSVA, Mrs. Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, lauded the college management for their proactive approach to student welfare. She emphasized that higher institutions are more than just centers for degree acquisition; they are the primary grounds for shaping the values and attitudes that students carry into the wider society.
Addressing the gathered students, Vivour-Adeniyi highlighted that SGBV remains a critical societal plague that requires collective vigilance. She implored the youth to become ambassadors for change, stressing the importance of reporting incidents immediately and supporting peers who may be suffering in silence.
Collaborative Advocacy and Institutional Support
The event featured various resource persons who provided technical insight into the different levels of abuse and the legal and psychological pathways available for handling them. The presence of high-ranking college officials underscored the institutional weight behind the campaign.
Key attendees included the Deputy Provost (Admin), Mrs. Oyeronke Izobo; the Registrar, Mr. Christopher Ekundayo; and the Dean of Student Affairs, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babatunde. Together, the DSVA and LASCOHET management reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the dignity and well-being of every student and staff member on campus.
