Protesters in Lagos joined the nationwide mass protest organised by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), to protest at the Federal Government’s 45 per cent increase in electricity tariff.
Contrary to expectations, the protests were not held at the different areas where offices of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) were, but at the main office in Ikeja.
An earlier visit to the Ikeja Electricty Company offices at Ejigbo, Jakande, Okota and Isolo showed it was business as usual as they went about their daily business.
At the protest in Ikeja, protesters were said to have stormed the streets to lend their solidarity to the call for reduction in the tariff, as well as increase in power supply.
The protesters were made up of workers of NLC, TUC, non-governmental agencies, foundations and all well meaning Nigerians.
The protest, which started from Ikeja roundabout at about 10:00 a.m. and ended at Alausa office of Ikeja Electric (IE) at about 1:00 p.m. disrupted the operations of Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) in the state.
The protest was led by the Vice President of NLC, Com. Amaechi Asugwuni, Com. Tony Ebaho of TUC, Com. Issa Aremu of Joint Action Front (JAF), Coordinator of Consumer Protection Forum, Mr. Adeola Samuel-Ilori and representatives from United Action from Democracy (UAD) among others.
The leaders of different community-based organisations from Ajeromi Ifelodun, Ago-Okoto, Ajegunle, Ire-Akari and Oke-Afa and Isolo-Ishaga among others also participated in the protest, which caused gridlocks in Ikeja and its environs.
