Hinged on the recent spate of kidnappings in the state, the Lagos State Government has sensitised people living in the state on kidnapping and the law prohibiting it.
The one-day sensitisation programme which borders on 2017 Kidnapping Prohibition Law, civic engagement on kidnapping among others was held at the State’ Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja on Thursday.
In his welcome address, the Special Adviser to the state governor on Civic Engagement, Mr. Kehinde Joseph bemoaned the rate of kidnapping in the state.
“The rate at which kidnappings occur in Lagos state is so alarming that the government cannot fold arms to watch such a menace in the state.”
Admonishing residents to be vigilant and report suspicious observations in their environment to security agencies, he added that the Neighbourhood Safety Corps of the state government was established for the safety of lives and property in the state.
In similar vein, Barrister Jide Ologun, former chairman of Nigerian Institute of Public Relation (NIPR), while speaking on the effects of kidnapping on its victims noted that poverty and unemployment stands out as major among factors that lead to kidnapping.
He also stated inadequate police protection as being the height of insecurity of the residents in the state.

He said: ‘’The Kidnapping Prohibition Law, 2017 which was inaugurated by the Lagos State Governor Ambode features the death penalty provision for kidnapping where the death of the victim occurs.’’
While emphasizing the importance of the Neighbourhood Watch and The Citizens Gate which is an online platform designed for reporting issues directly to the government, Barrister Jide listed various measures put together by the state government to protect its citizens which includes;
In suggestions to the safety measures against kidnapping and the furtherance of such measures, the Barrister proposed enhanced community relations and intelligence gathering with global technologies that would keep lives and properties safe.
