Following recent global health declarations regarding an Ebola virus outbreak in parts of Central and East Africa, the Lagos State Government has taken proactive steps to shield the state from potential infection. Although there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola within Lagos State or Nigeria, authorities are taking no chances given the city’s status as a major international travel hub and commercial epicenter.
In response to the federal government strengthening biosecurity screening protocols at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, the Lagos State Safety Commission has issued a comprehensive precautionary advisory. The directive is specifically aimed at all owners, operators, and managers of hospitality and social establishments across the state, urging them to implement strict preventative defenses immediately.
Mandated Hygiene and Sanitation Upgrades
With high-density social venues like nightclubs, hotels, event centers, lounges, and restaurants experiencing a high volume of close-contact interactions, the state is mandating a return to strict hygiene protocols. All public and private operators must immediately reinstate mandatory hand hygiene stations equipped with running water and liquid soap, or commercial-grade alcohol-based hand sanitizers, at all facility entry points and common areas.
Establishments are also required to significantly increase the frequency of their cleaning and disinfecting routines. Management teams must ensure that hospital-grade disinfectants are utilized on all high-touch surfaces, including countertops, door handles, handrails, menus, and payment terminals to minimize any risk of surface transmission.
Staff Training and Emergency Isolation Protocols
Beyond surface sanitation, the advisory places a heavy emphasis on workforce readiness and crowd control. Venue operators are advised to manage crowd capacities to minimize extreme physical overcrowding and ensure optimal ventilation within enclosed spaces. Furthermore, management teams must properly train front-of-house, housekeeping, and security personnel to recognize early symptoms of illness, implement daily health checks for staff, and enforce a strict stay-at-home policy for any employee exhibiting signs of fever.
To ensure rapid response in the event of an emergency, hospitality centers must now designate a temporary, well-ventilated holding area on-site to safely isolate any patron or staff member who experiences sudden, severe illness while awaiting medical evacuation.
Commitment to Enforcement and Public Safety
The Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, emphasized that these measures are about proactive defense rather than panic, noting that the Commission has a firm mandate to ensure public safety.
“Lagosians and operators must remain calm, vigilant, and fully cooperative. Safety inspectors will increase routine monitoring and support visits across the state to ensure compliance with these directives,” Mojola stated.
