In a strategic move to fortify grassroots medical services, the Lagos State Government, via Health District III, has commenced the distribution of advanced medical equipment to Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the Ibeju-Lekki, Eti-Osa, and Epe axes.
The initiative, announced Monday at the District Headquarters in Ikoyi, aligns with the state’s broader mandate to ensure that quality healthcare remains accessible to every citizen, regardless of their location.
Strengthening the Healthcare Value Chain
The distributed medical supplies comprise essential tools designed to handle both routine monitoring and emergency interventions. Key items include Blood Pressure Monitors, Patient Monitors for tracking vitals in critically ill patients, First Aid kits, and Ambu Bags specifically for adult and pediatric resuscitation.
Dr. Monsurat Adeleke, the Permanent Secretary of Health District III, emphasized that this distribution is a proactive step toward strengthening the health system and narrowing the gap between the government and the citizenry. She noted that equipping these facilities is vital for maintaining a resilient healthcare infrastructure.
A Call for Accountability and Partnership
While the government continues to invest in hardware, Dr. Adeleke stressed that the human element maintenance and utilization is equally crucial. She urged Medical Officers of Health (MOHs) to ensure the tools remain accessible to patients rather than sitting idle in storage.
“I would like to appeal to all our Medical Officers of Health to make sure this equipment is put to good use and avoid locking them up in the store,” Dr. Adeleke stated. “When patients come into these facilities, make sure that we use this equipment judiciously. By doing so, PHC utilisation would increase.”
The Permanent Secretary further called on private partners and stakeholders to sustain their support for the state, ensuring that medical services across all PHCs remain uninterrupted and high-performing.
Commitment from the Field
Receiving the equipment on behalf of the practitioners, the Medical Officer of Health for Ikoyi-Obalende, Dr. Oyebanji Elegushi, expressed gratitude for the intervention. He pledged that the frontline teams would exercise strict oversight to ensure the equipment is used properly to improve patient outcomes.
By prioritizing these rural and suburban hubs, the Lagos State Government aims to decentralize specialized care and reduce the burden on secondary and tertiary hospitals.
