Operatives of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) have intensified their enforcement actions against environmental sabotage, apprehending several illegal cart pushers during a series of coordinated raids across the metropolis.
The exercise was carried out by the Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) unit, which remains stationed at strategic points to curb the growing trend of indiscriminate waste disposal.
Targeted Enforcement
The crackdown focused on high-traffic areas where illegal dumping has persisted despite repeated cleaning efforts. Key locations where carts were confiscated and operators dislodged include, Anthony Oke (Newcastle axis), Ifako Gbagada, Alagomeji–Yaba, Adjoining suburban corridors
According to LAWMA officials, these illegal operators collect refuse from residents and businesses only to dump them at unauthorized locations and drainage systems, effectively undermining the state’s multi-million naira cleanup initiatives and defacing the urban landscape.
A Call for Compliance
The authority emphasized that achieving a Greater Lagos requires more than just government intervention; it requires a shift in public behavior. According to the report, residents are strongly advised to stop patronizing cart pushers and to desist from dumping refuse on streets that have been repeatedly cleaned. Sustainable cleanliness requires compliance, not sabotage.
Moving Forward
LAWMA has reaffirmed that its surveillance teams will remain on high alert to ensure that cleared sites do not revert to illegal dumpsites. Residents are encouraged to use assigned Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators to ensure their waste is processed through official channels, protecting both the environment and public health.
