The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has officially commenced its flagship student engagement initiative, the Kings and Queens Club, for the year 2026. Designed as a proactive measure to cultivate youth leadership, the club has been introduced to selected secondary schools across Education District III to transform students into active peer advocates against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).
Educating Youth on Gender and Stereotypes
The initiative kicked off its first session on June 3rd, 2026, centering on the theme “Understanding Gender Identity.” During this opening session, participating students engaged in critical discussions aimed at distinguishing between biological sex and socially constructed gender roles. The curriculum is specifically designed to encourage young minds to challenge harmful societal expectations and deep-rooted stereotypes that often fuel gender-based discrimination.
An official representative from the Lagos DSVA emphasized the long-term vision of the program, stating:
“This is more than a club. It is a movement to shape a new generation of young people who will challenge harmful norms, champion positive change, and help build a safer Lagos.”
A Six-Week Program for Community Safety
Over the next six weeks, the intensive program will guide students through interactive discussions, reflective exercises, and real-life scenarios. The curriculum focuses heavily on teaching youth about their vital role in fostering respect, equity, and safety within their respective school environments and wider communities. By providing these tools, the DSVA aims to establish a sustainable network of young advocates capable of identifying and preventing violence before it starts.
