In a major bid to revolutionize grassroots healthcare delivery, the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB) has officially commenced the distribution of state-of-the-art automated medical laboratory equipment to selected Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities across the state.
This massive intervention is driven under the “Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity & Equity Primary Health Care (HOPE-PHC)” Project, a strategic initiative of the World Bank funded directly by the Lagos State Government.
The extensive distribution exercise, which kicked off on Monday, June 22, 2026, represents a monumental milestone in the state’s ongoing mission to bolster medical laboratory services. By integrating cutting-edge technology into local clinics, the government aims to drastically improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce turnaround times for test results, and ensure that local health centers meet global minimum laboratory service standards.
Cutting-Edge Tech to Power Local Diagnostics
The modern medical arsenal being deployed to the frontline clinics includes highly advanced diagnostic machinery designed to handle critical medical investigations. Among the equipment are Haematology Analysers for full blood count testing, ISE Electrolyte Analysers for sodium and potassium analysis, and Electrophoresis Machines for haemoglobin testing. Additionally, facilities are receiving Olympus Microscopes for confirmatory investigations and Semi-Automated Chemistry Analysers to handle vital liver, renal, and lipid profile checks.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, the Permanent Secretary of the LSPHCB, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, mni, emphasized that this initiative represents a deliberate, long-term investment in the wellbeing of Lagosians. He noted that the HOPE-PHC Project is simultaneously funding the renovation of PHC facilities and the recruitment of additional health workers to ensure a comprehensive overhaul of the system.
“Quality healthcare begins with accurate and timely diagnosis. The deployment of these automated laboratory equipment demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the Lagos State Government to strengthening health care by equipping our facilities with modern technology that supports efficient, reliable and patient-centred laboratory services and counts towards the attainment of Universal health coverage,” Dr. Mustafa stated.
Sustainability, Training, and the THEMES+ Agenda
To prevent the perennial issue of equipment abandonment, the Board has established stringent protocols for sustainability. Dr. Mustafa revealed that the intervention goes far beyond mere distribution, incorporating mandatory capacity building, routine maintenance schedules, and continuous technical support for laboratory personnel. Beneficiary facilities are required to provide optimal environments to protect the new assets.
The Permanent Secretary further lauded the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his visionary leadership and financial backing of the health sector. He reaffirmed that the LSPHCB remains fully aligned with the state’s transformative THEMES+ Agenda, ensuring that affordable, high-quality, and people-centered healthcare is accessible to every resident in Lagos State.
