Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday, passed a resolution calling on the Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode to direct the relevant agencies to sanitize the gridlock on Lagos roads. The Assembly made that known at its first plenary session after its inauguration.
Hon Lanre Ogunyemi (Ojo Constituency II) moved the motion following a resolution by stating that road users at the Lagos-Badagry expressway have been undergoing harrowing experience due to on-going reconstruction of the road.
He said that the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) should urgently brace up to carry out palliative measures on the road to ensure for sanity to be quickly restored as rainy season begins in earnest.
Ogunyemi said: “We are all aware of the situation of roads especially during rainy seasons. And as we all know, Lagos is below sea level and we know the effects of flooding on our roads where we battle with potholes causing traffic logjam making Lagosians spending lengthy productive hours in traffic particularly where we have commercial drivers driving against traffic”.
A co-sponsor of the motion, Hon Bisi Yusuff of Alimosho Constituency I, noted that contrary to situation of roads at the time traffic law was first introduced, Lagos current traffic situation requires urgent attention; adding that: “Even law enforcement agents do drive against traffic just as the corridors dedicated for BRT and LAG Buses are being plied by other motorists. As such, law enforcement agents must be quickly drafted to such areas to restore sanity”.
Hon Abiodun Tobun of Epe Constituency I, also said that some hoodlums often take advantage of the traffic situation to dispossess Lagosians of their valuables, thereby asserting the need to address the traffic blockage.
Another lawmaker, Sanai Agunbiade, Majority Leader, urged FERMA to wake up to its responsibility with APC now in government at the center, while he explained that the immediate past FG played politics with the demands to intervene on federal roads in the state. He noted that the current government is set to upturn the old order of negligence.
