In a move set to redefine how governance is measured at the grassroots, the Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI) will formally unveil its State of Democracy Performance in Nigeria Report on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. The launch, scheduled for 10:00 AM at the Abuja Continental Hotel, marks the introduction of the first comprehensive, data-driven assessment specifically targeting the democratic health of Nigeria’s 36 states.
The report departs from traditional high-level analysis by focusing on the subnational level, providing an evidence-based look at how democracy functions in practice rather than just on paper. By blending citizen surveys, expert consultations, and rigorous field data, KDI aims to provide a clear mirror for state governments and the governed alike.
A Multidimensional Approach to Accountability
The study evaluates the states through several critical pillars, including electoral participation, political inclusion, and institutional effectiveness. Unlike reports that focus solely on the federal capital, this research dives into the transparency, rule of law, and civic space available within individual states, capturing the lived experience of Nigerians.
The Executive Director of KDI, Bukola Idowu, emphasized that the report is intended to be a catalyst for reform rather than a static document.
“We position the State of Democracy Performance in Nigeria Report as a living accountability tool,” Idowu stated. “By basing democratic measurement on both institutional evidence and lived citizens experience, we provide an impartial benchmark for bolstering democracy where it matters most: at the level closest to the citizens.”
High-Level Dialogue for Democratic Reform
The launch will be headlined by a High-Level Stakeholder Policy Dialogue, designed to transition the report’s findings into actionable policy. The event is expected to draw a significant gathering of governors, senior policymakers, legislators, and members of the diplomatic corps, alongside civil society leaders and development partners.
KDI has indicated that this report is not a one-off publication. The organization plans to update the assessment periodically to track progress, identify democratic regression, and highlight successful reforms across the federation.
Driving Citizen-Led Development
As an independent, non-governmental organization, KDI remains at the forefront of advancing citizen-led democratic development. Through this initiative, the organization continues its mission of promoting inclusive governance and accountability, pushing for reforms that deepen democratic practice well beyond the four-year election cycle.
