As part of efforts to build the capacity of the media in conflict sensitive reporting, the International Press Centre (IPC) Lagos is organizing a two-day media workshop for journalists in the south west on Thursday, September 19 and Friday, September 20, 2013.
The workshop with the theme “enhanced media role in conflict resolution and management for sustainable democracy and development” is supported by the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Democratic Governance for Development (DGD II) Project.
Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, said the specific objective of the workshop is to enhance the conflict reporting skills of the participants towards effective advocacy and engagement in conflict mediation, management and resolution.
According to the IPC Director, the workshop has become imperative in view of the violent conflicts in different parts of the country and the need to emphasize the role of the media in their transformation so as to create the enabling environment for development and the deepening of democratic governance in Nigeria,
Mr. Arogundade said participants at the workshop will include twenty five middle and senior career female and male journalists from the print and broadcast media in the six south-western states of Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti and Oyo.
He added that the workshop would feature presentations and discussions on the relationship and effect of conflict on democratic development; language use and imagery in media reporting of conflicts and the Social/Human costs and transparency issues in conflicts and disasters.
