The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has concluded a two-day technical workshop dedicated to the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into electoral management, signaling a move toward more technologically advanced electoral processes in Nigeria.
In a report shared via its official X handle, the commission noted that the second day of the workshop focused on consolidating insights and charting a clear pathway for the structured and responsible adoption of AI-driven solutions. The sessions aimed to define a strategic direction that ensures the deployment of AI strengthens electoral integrity.
The proceedings included extensive technical reviews of the INEC AI Roadmap, led by experts including Mr. Obaje Ukeh, Country Director for IFES Kenya and Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist for Nigeria. Discussions also explored the commission’s existing data ecosystem and emerging opportunities to leverage technology for more efficient electoral administration.
Mr. Seray Jah, the IFES Regional Director for Africa and Country Director for Nigeria, facilitated sessions on forward-looking approaches to technology integration. Central to the deliberations was a detailed presentation on the INEC Framework on Artificial Intelligence, which establishes the guiding principles for the ethical and secure use of AI across all commission operations.
Project Manager for IFES Nigeria, Judith Toryem, also led sessions focused on institutional readiness and the practical considerations necessary for the successful adoption of these tools.
According to the commission, the workshop served as a critical step in charting a clear pathway for the Commission’s structured and responsible adoption of AI-driven solutions.
The event concluded with an evaluation of the roadmap and a formal group session with participants and facilitators, marking the end of the two-day technical engagement.
