In a strategic move to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic framework, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, led a delegation to visit the South Korean National Assembly and the Constitutional Court of Korea.
The high-level visit was conducted as part of the activities of the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP) team, aimed at understudying advanced democratic systems across the globe.
Strengthening Electoral Credibility through Legal Frameworks
The diplomatic and educational visit provided the Nigerian delegation with deep insights into the critical roles played by the Korean Legislature and Judiciary in fostering the evolution, stability, and credibility of South Korea’s democratic process.
Speaking on the significance of the diplomatic engagement, an INEC official noted the value of cross-border institutional learning.
“The visit provided insight into the role of the Korean Electoral Legal System, particularly the Legislature and Judiciary, in the evolution and credibility of the democratic process,” the commission stated.
Exploring South Korea’s Democratic History
As part of the working tour, Prof. Amupitan and the IEOP team were taken on a comprehensive guided tour of the National Assembly Museum and the Constitutional Court Museum.
The historical excursions offered the Nigerian delegation a foundational look into the legal and democratic evolution of the Republic of Korea, showcasing how the East Asian nation transitioned into one of the world’s most stable democracies. The insights gathered are expected to inform ongoing conversations around electoral reforms and judicial transparency in Nigeria.
