The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has led a Nigerian delegation to the International Election Observation Programme for the Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections taking place in South Korea.
The programme, which runs from May 29 to June 5, 2026, in Seoul, brings together election management bodies, international experts and observers from different countries to observe and exchange knowledge on the conduct of local government elections in the Republic of Korea.
Prof. Amupitan was accompanied on the mission by National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu; the Chief Technical Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Dimis Mai-Lafia; and the Director of Training, Dr. Binta Kasim Mohammed.
According to INEC, the participation of its delegation is aimed at deepening institutional knowledge and strengthening capacity in election administration, observation processes and broader electoral governance practices.
The Commission said the engagement will also provide an opportunity to learn emerging global trends and best practices that can further improve Nigeria’s electoral system.
The South Korea observation programme is expected to expose participating electoral bodies to practical models of conducting credible, transparent and efficient local government elections.
INEC added that insights gathered from the exercise would contribute to ongoing efforts to enhance the integrity and efficiency of elections in Nigeria.
