Centre for Citizens with Disabilities, CCD has urged the Federal and States Governments in Nigeria to increase access to rehabilitation and reintegration services for persons with disabilities to ensure reduction of PWDs beggars in our communities.

CCD made the call through a press release issued by its Executive Director, David Anyaele in commemoration of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities 2020.

The group also called for commitments of Federal and States Governments to access to healthcare / medical services, inclusive education and poverty alleviation programmes and access to public infrastructures among persons with disabilities.

With the aim of ensuring adequate protection of the right of PWDs, the group also called on “State governments yet to adopt the National Disability Act like Abia, Enugu, Rivers, Imo, Oyo, Benue, Delta, Borno, Kaduna, Ogun, Bayelsa, Cross River and Edo States to take speedy measures to pass laws for the protection of rights of persons with disabilities in their States.”

CCD disclosed that it “is committed to supporting governments at all level, organisations of persons with disabilities and international agencies to ensure that no one is left behind in governance and development by reason of his or her disabilities. Together we shall create a Nigeria that is free from exclusion of persons with disabilities in development.”

December 3 is a date set aside annually for the observance of the International Day of persons with disabilities as proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3.

The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

It also seeks to increase awareness of benefits to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
