The Nigeria Internet Governance Forum on Thursday has made demands to the government and regulators of the country’s Digital space to improve and expand the affordability of broadband penetration in the country to enable businesses, youths and corporate organizations take advantage of the internet.
The 2019 edition of the NIGF tagged: Enabling Digital Commonwealth for Development witnessed different workshops which was attended by digital practitioners and stakeholders with burdens to make demands in improving and making affordability of data a reality in the country.
Speaking at one of the workshops on Diversifying Internet Economy through local Content innovations and Protection, Kemabonta Inye, a digital expert and internet practitioner, he proposes that efforts should be made by government regulators to create demand for families to have internet access in their homes and Telecom operators will be able to have family data plans.
He however tresses that this will enable families to have access to websites of e-commerce companies. With more access to the internet at homes, family members can have access to medical services at their will.
Participants also demanded for free digital libraries in tertiary institutions which will enable students to study materials.
A representative from the Office for Nigerian Content Development in ICT (ONC), he advised youths to build their skills for online content and have a drive for technology based research oriented projects.
A tech start up expert at the workshop urged regulators to liaise with multinationals to make their APIs accessible at subsidized rate for tech start-ups who are working on creating local contents and also encourage more tech hubs for the youths
