Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has withdrawn from the governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) scheduled for Thursday.
In a statement titled “My decision to withdraw from the Rivers State Gubernatorial Primaries,” which he personally signed on Wednesday night, Fubara said he has decided to step down from the contest after what he described as deep reflection and consultations.
He also pledged to support whoever emerges as the party’s candidate.
“After deep reflection and extensive consultations with my family, friends, and associates, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw from the APC gubernatorial primaries. I do so with a full heart and with a firm commitment to support whoever emerges as the candidate of our great party,” he said.
Fubara said leadership requires sacrifice, noting that personal ambition must sometimes give way to collective interest.
“Leadership is ultimately about sacrifice. There comes a time when personal ambition must yield to the greater good of the people. Rivers State is bigger than any individual,” he stated.
He added that his decision was guided by the need to prioritise peace, stability, and unity in the state.
Fubara also expressed gratitude to his supporters for their loyalty and commitment, acknowledging the disappointment his withdrawal may cause.
“To my supporters who stood firmly with me throughout this journey… I understand the disappointment, the anger, and the pain many of you may feel,” he said.
He further appreciated the All Progressives Congress for the platform and support extended to him, as well as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his encouragement.
“The APC remains our collective home,” he added, urging party members to remain united and committed.
Fubara stressed that his withdrawal was not out of weakness or fear but a “conviction and sacrifice” aimed at promoting peace and unity in Rivers State.
He maintained that he remains committed to serving the people of the state till the end of his tenure.
