Forget it!

By Motunrayo Famuyiwa-Alaka

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past (Isaiah 43:18 – NIV)

Change is constant. Human beings are mostly aware of this fact. People are however generally quite unwilling to change. There is something about the old that feels good. It is known terrain. It is safe.

2018 is here. It is still new. 2017 and all the years before it are now old. It is normal to want to hold on to the past but it slips away anyway. You need to let it go in order to better appreciate what is new.

Here are a few things that happened in 2017 and the years before it that you need to forget in a bid to enjoy 2018:

Failures: Most people have a long list of things they plan to achieve every year. Like me, you may have recorded a number of failures in 2017. Failures have the capacity to make you feel less adequate. They question your ability to succeed. I urge you to learn from your failures and move on.

Disappointments/Hurts: Perhaps someone/people promised to be there for you in 2017 but failed. During trying times, it is usual to find out that those you consider your friends are not quite so. This can be very heart-breaking. It is true you got hurt badly but you need to forget it.

Successes: It is difficult to consider successes something to forget. You may have accomplished much in 2017. Your successes are worth celebrating. They are your trophies and it is okay to dance around with them. Yet, if you spend too long a time in jubilation, time passes and they become past glory. You need to drop the trophy in order to ‘run’ again.

There is a tendency to think that to forget is to obliterate your memory. This is far from the truth. It actually means to refuse to allow a particular thing have its normal hold or effect on you when you remember it.

Whatever is good or bad in your past that makes it difficult for you to start anew, forget it! Why? God will be doing new and better things in 2018 and you want to be sure you are undistracted.

 Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me to forget the past. Give me the grace to move on. Amen.
