The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to eliminate decades of fragmented and inconsistent education data with the upcoming launch of the Digital National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS). Designed as a transformative national digital platform, DNEMIS aims to strengthen evidence-based planning, improve accountability, and enhance service delivery across the nation’s education sector.

The flagship platform will be officially launched on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, alongside the Public DNEMIS Portal and the inauguration of the DNEMIS State Implementation Teams. The initiative represents a major milestone in the execution of the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI), a pivotal reform under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) championed by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa.

A Shift From Assumptions to Credible Data

Speaking at a pre-launch media briefing in Abuja, Mr. Adebayo Onigbanjo, the National Project Coordinator of the Special Programmes Operations and Implementation Unit in the Office of the Honourable Minister of Education, emphasized that the system was conceived to rectify long-standing governance constraints caused by unreliable metrics.

“Data is no longer a back-office function; it is now the engine driving education reform in Nigeria,” Mr. Onigbanjo stated. “The initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that education reforms are driven by credible evidence rather than assumptions.”

Mr. Onigbanjo explained that the Federal Ministry of Education developed NEDI as a comprehensive national framework to harmonize, standardize, and strengthen education data management across all academic levels. DNEMIS will ensure that every single learner, teacher, school, and public investment in education is captured within a unified, trusted national database to optimize budgeting and policymaking.

Ending Manual Processes With Global Technology

To modernize administration, the platform has been built on the globally recognized District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2) framework. According to Miss Mojoyin Adebajo, the Special Assistant to the Honourable Minister of Education on Digital Communications and E-Learning, the platform is set to completely digitize the Annual School Census, replacing slow, largely manual data collection processes.

Miss Adebajo revealed that the new system will generate accurate, real-time information on schools, learners, teachers, and education infrastructure, allowing for precise resource allocation and enhanced program monitoring.

Unprecedented Transparency via the Public Portal

A major highlight of the rollout is the introduction of the Public DNEMIS Portal, which marks a historic shift toward open governance in Nigeria’s academic landscape. For the first time, selected official education metrics will be made completely accessible to researchers, policymakers, journalists, development partners, and civil society organizations.

Ministry officials noted that this public access will actively promote transparency, eradicate data manipulation, and encourage broader stakeholder participation in shaping Nigeria’s educational future.

Strategic Partnerships and Future Outlook

The successful development of DNEMIS was achieved through critical technical support provided by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the University of Oslo. The Federal Ministry of Education described the collaboration as a prime example of how strategic international partnerships can accelerate sustainable national reforms.

With the launch of DNEMIS, the Federal Government expects to firmly bridge the institutional gaps between federal and state education frameworks, advancing the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda for quality, globally competitive education. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working hand-in-hand with state governments to ensure the platform delivers quality learning tracking for every Nigerian child.
