The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with UNESCO and the Government of Japan, has flagged off a three-day Master Training Workshop aimed at transforming teacher professional development across the country through mobile-based learning technologies.
The initiative, designed under the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) framework, targets training at least 2,000 teachers and school leaders nationwide, while placing a dedicated emphasis on empowering female educators to take on leadership roles in the school system.
Strategic Partnerships and Funding
The project is spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Education alongside key international partners, including the Government of Japan, the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA), the Pan-African University (PAU), and Castalia Co. Ltd.
As part of their commitment to modernizing education in Nigeria, the Government of Japan is investing approximately $1 million into the initiative. To further boost technological integration, partner organizations presented 40 tablets and two edge computing devices to facilitate seamless nationwide rollout and monitoring.
Focus on AI, Digital Literacy, and Modern Pedagogy
The workshop is structured to equip master trainers with modern digital skills necessary to broaden access to continuous professional learning for educators. Participating teachers will undergo comprehensive modules covering digital literacy, Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, gender-responsive pedagogy, mental health, and learner-centred teaching methodologies.
Additionally, participants will be trained on the deployment and usage of the GOKU Mobile Learning Platform to drive digital learning accessibility even in remote areas.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to Educational Renewal
Speaking on behalf of the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, the Director of Colleges of Education, Dr. Uchenna Uba, highlighted the long-term impact of the program on the country’s learning standards.
“This initiative represents a major milestone in advancing teacher quality, digital innovation, and improved learning outcomes under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI),” Dr. Uba stated.
The Federal Ministry of Education reiterated its commitment to expanding strategic partnerships and technological innovations to ensure that every Nigerian child receives inclusive, equitable, and high-quality education.
