In a major move to slash Nigeria’s reliance on imported dairy, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has entered high-level talks with the European Union (EU) Dairy Coalition of the Willing.

The partnership aims to overhaul the nation’s dairy landscape through multi-billion-naira investments and technical expertise.

The discussions, held today in Abuja, signal a shift toward industrializing Nigeria’s livestock sector by leveraging the global footprints of a coalition of three dairy powerhouses Arla Foods, Danone, and FrieslandCampina.

A Focus on Genetic Transformation

During the meeting, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, emphasized that the bedrock of this new era is not just infrastructure, but animal genetics. He argued that traditional methods must give way to science-driven productivity to meet national demand.

“You can talk about livestock transformation for decades, but without improving the productivity of the animals, we will not achieve meaningful results. Genetics is therefore central to this collaboration,” Minister Maiha stated.

To move from dialogue to action, the Minister proposed the immediate establishment of a national breeding centre. This facility would serve as the nerve center for enhancing milk yields and ensuring that Nigerian dairy herds can compete on a global scale.

Leveraging Global Expertise

The EU Dairy Coalition, which brings together companies with over 400 years of combined industry experience, expressed its readiness to align with Nigeria’s agricultural goals. The coalition’s primary objective is to create a sustainable value chain that benefits local farmers and consumers alike.

Sanne Simmers, Coordinator of the EU Dairy Coalition of the Willing, highlighted the synergy between the private sector’s capabilities and the government’s vision.

“Our focus as a coalition is to work together to improve dairy productivity in Nigeria, particularly through better cattle genetics and stronger collaboration with the Ministry. By combining global expertise with Nigeria’s vast potential, we can help unlock sustainable growth in the sector,” Simmers noted.

Economic Impact and Market Potential

Nigeria currently faces a significant gap between local milk production and national consumption. By partnering with the “willing and capable” firms of the EU, the Federal Government aims to reduce foreign exchange expenditure on dairy imports, create rural employment opportunities within the dairy value chain, and ensure food security through a consistent supply of locally produced milk.

The Minister concluded by reiterating that Nigeria’s enormous market potential makes it a prime destination for such strategic investments, promising a streamlined working relationship to ensure the partnership’s success.
