The Federal Government has officially commended the successful launch of the National Examinations Council (NECO) Computer-Based Test (CBT) for the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). Officials have described the transition as a landmark achievement in safeguarding examination integrity and accelerating digital literacy across Nigeria’s education sector.
Monitoring the examination process in Abuja, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, expressed high satisfaction with the seamless deployment of the technology. Ahmad reported an absence of technical disruptions and praised the adaptability of the participating candidates.
Driving Integrity Through Digitalization
The shift to a digitized examination system marks a strategic effort by the Ministry of Education to combat systemic academic fraud. According to government officials, the automated format fundamentally alters how security is maintained during high-stakes testing.
“The CBT format enhances examination credibility by randomising questions, reducing opportunities for malpractice and promoting merit-based assessment,” Professor Ahmad stated during her assessment of the Abuja test centers.
The Minister emphasized that the federal government is committed to a gradual and inclusive nationwide expansion of the CBT infrastructure. Addressing public concerns regarding unequal access to technology, she reassured families that no student will be disadvantaged due to regional infrastructure deficits. To achieve uniform coverage, the Ministry of Education is currently collaborating with the National Assembly, state governments, and private sector stakeholders to build robust digital testing centers across the country.
High Enrollment and Rapid Grading Timelines
In terms of student participation, the transition has already yielded historic enrollment figures. NECO Registrar, Professor Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, announced that a total of 1,378,048 candidates registered for the 2026 SSCE.
Demographic data for this year’s cohort highlights a significant milestone in gender parity, with over 700,000 female candidates registered for the exams.
Looking ahead, the examination body aims to deliver swift feedback to the candidates. Professor Wushishi confirmed that results are expected to be released by the first week of September 2026 or earlier, signaling a faster turnaround time made possible by automated grading systems. Through these coordinated technological upgrades, the Federal Government aims to elevate Nigeria’s academic standards and foster a globally competitive workforce.
