The European Union has formally upgraded its diplomatic and economic relationship with Nigeria, announcing a massive €290 million (EUR) investment package under the EU Global Gateway strategy. The announcement was made during the Eighth Ministerial Dialogue in Abuja, co-chaired by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and the EU High Representative, H.E. Ms. Kaja Kallas.

This new funding, mobilized through Team Europe, targets seven critical operations including digitalization, healthcare, agriculture, and migration management. The initiative is designed to align the EU’s global strategy with the Nigerian Federal Government’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, signaling a new era of bilateral cooperation.

Commenting on the strengthened alliance, Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated:

“In the current geopolitical context, the European Union is keen to enhance its partnership with Nigeria. Bringing more EU investment to Nigeria, aligning with the Renewed Hope agenda for the Nigerian Federal Government, is a key priority for both sides in this regard.”

Digital Transformation and Infrastructure

A significant portion of the package, totaling €131 million, is earmarked for the digitalization sector. In collaboration with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the EU will support the installation of 90,000 km of fiber optic cable. This infrastructure aim is to provide secure, affordable internet access to 33 million currently unserved Nigerians. Furthermore, the investment will support the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program to train and employ Nigerian youth in high-tech roles.

Advancing Healthcare and Local Manufacturing

To reduce dependency on imports, the EU is allocating €55 million to bolster local production of medicines and vaccines. Through a partnership between the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Bank of Industry (BoI), preferential loans will be made available to Nigerian pharmaceutical companies. This effort includes specialized vocational training to ensure the local workforce can meet international manufacturing standards.

Climate-Smart Agriculture and Export Growth

The agricultural sector will receive €86 million to enhance value chains in cocoa and dairy. The goal is to help Nigeria double its milk production and transition toward climate-smart farming practices. By providing smallholder farmers with access to credit, the EU aims to ensure Nigerian cocoa meets sustainable standards for export to European markets, fostering long-term economic stability for rural communities.

Strengthening Migration Management

Addressing humanitarian and security concerns, the EU committed €16 million to migration management. These funds will support the voluntary reintegration of migrants and provide social and psychological support to returnees. Additionally, Team Europe will collaborate closely with Nigerian security services to dismantle criminal networks involved in human trafficking and smuggling.

With these new commitments, the total Team Europe support signed since 2025 has reached a staggering €962.5 million, covering sectors ranging from Lagos lagoon transport to renewable energy and the fight against gender-based violence.
