The future of over 3,600 children in the Yangoji community of Kwali Area Council is currently hanging by a thread.
LEA Primary School, the only accessible public primary institution for a community of 9,500 residents, has reached a state of near-total collapse, leaving students to learn in environments that are described as “death traps.”
For over two years, the facility has suffered from severely damaged roofs, shattered classrooms, and structurally unsound walls.
The decay has reached a breaking point, with several sections of the school buildings already caving in, forcing the administration to improvise under desperate conditions.
Overcrowding and Structural Failure
The recent collapse of a major classroom block has triggered a logistical nightmare. Currently, Primary 1 and Primary 2 students are forced to share the same cramped space, resulting in an unprecedented population of over 600 pupils per classroom. This level of overcrowding has made effective instruction impossible and created a high-risk environment for the children.
“Half the time, the pupils are in a state of constant fear,” as stated on X. “They are literally waiting for the buildings to collapse on them while they try to learn. No child should have to choose between an education and their physical safety.”
A Plea for Urgent Intervention
Despite being a critical hub for the educational development of the Kwali Area Council, the school has reportedly been neglected by authorities for multiple budget cycles. The deteriorating state of the school serves as a stark reminder of the infrastructure deficit facing rural education in the Federal Capital Territory.
Community leaders and concerned stakeholders have issued an urgent plea for intervention to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, Senator Ireti Kingibe, and the Federal Ministry of Education. They are also calling on local representatives, Hon. Danladi Chiya and Hon. Abdulrahman Ajiya, to facilitate the immediate reconstruction of the facility and provide essential learning materials before a total structural failure results in a preventable tragedy.
