The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. General Birame Diop, has met with members of the Permanent Representative Committee (PRC) of ECOWAS Member States at the Commission’s new headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting was the first engagement between General Diop and members of the PRC since he assumed office as President of the ECOWAS Commission.
The ECOWAS Commission said the meeting provided an opportunity for the President to brief PRC members on the current state of the Community and outline the priorities of his administration.
The priorities are in line with decisions reached at the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, held on July 19, 2026, in Lungi, Sierra Leone.
Focus on Regional Integration
The PRC serves as an important interface between the ECOWAS Commission and Member States, with the Resident and Permanent Representations playing a role in advancing the region’s integration agenda.
During the meeting, General Diop underscored the importance of collective action, solidarity, mutual respect, tolerance and equity in building what he described as an integrated, resilient, peaceful and prosperous West Africa.
“It is a privilege for me to be given the opportunity to serve our Community. We need to have a common understanding of where we are today as a Community and what we need to do to move our Community forward. Let us work together in solidarity as a team to build the ECOWAS of the People, in line with the vision of our Founding Fathers,” H.E. General DIOP declared.
Diop Reaffirms Collaboration With Member States
The ECOWAS Commission President also reaffirmed the importance of close collaboration between the Commission and Member States’ Representations in strengthening regional cooperation and advancing the objectives of the Community.
General Diop assumed office as President of the ECOWAS Commission in September 2026, succeeding H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray of The Gambia. His appointment was announced at the 69th ECOWAS Summit in July, with the Commission confirming that he would assume office on September 1, 2026, in Abuja.
The engagement with the PRC comes as the new ECOWAS leadership begins its work on strengthening cooperation among Member States and advancing the regional integration agenda.
