The United States (US) has joined the league of other nations pledging the sum of $150 million in support for Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP).
This was announced on Friday by President Joe Biden at the COP27 Climate Change Conference in Egypt.
MAP NEWS reports that Africa Development Bank (AfDB) pledged $12.5 million, UK $230 million, the Netherlands $110 million, Germany to increase contribution to $6 billion by 2025.
Mr Biden noted that controlling climate change is imperative for the future of the world, adding that there is no reason not to finance clean energy in developing countries.
“To permanently bend the emission curve, every nation has to step up,” he said.
Meanwhile at earlier event, president of the AfDB, Mr Akinwunmi Adesina, called on Africa’s partners to assist with the remainder of $12.5 billion.
He urged world leaders to start matching words with action saying: “Africa is under siege; Africa cannot keep quiet. We are seeking a partnership.
“World leaders need to hear our voices. Megawatts of words must translate into megawatts of financing for Africa.”
