In a move to solidify the role of data in continental development, the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) has launched a landmark week-long training workshop in N’Djamena.
The initiative marks the first time in 19 years that Chad has hosted a training session under the African Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (ASTII) program.
The workshop, organized in collaboration with the AU Peace and Security Mission in Chad (AUC-PAPS) and the Ministry of Higher Education, is designed to equip local experts with specialized skills in research and innovation data collection and analysis. By fostering these technical capabilities, the program aims to bridge the gap between scientific advancement and regional stability.
Linking Data to Peace and Security
The training underscores a strategic shift toward data-driven governance. Officials emphasized that the integration of Research and Innovation (R&I) data is essential for the success of peace and security initiatives. This synergy is viewed as a primary driver for achieving the goals of Agenda 2063, the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2034), and the Science and Technology Implementation Plan (STYIP).
High-Level Support and Partnership
The opening of the event featured prominent leadership, including Honorable Dr. Sitak Yombatina Beni and H.E. Marie Jose Samba Ovono Obono. The workshop has also garnered significant international backing, with support provided by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP Chad) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
Highlighting the transformative nature of the gathering, a representative from AUDA-NEPAD noted the long-term impact of the initiative:
“This marks a significant moment, as it’s the first time in nearly two decades Chad has hosted such a pivotal ASTII training. The event underscores the vital link between peace, security, research, and innovation, driving development by connecting data to the ‘Africa We Want’.”
A Catalyst for Agenda 2063
As Chad integrates into the ASTII framework, the data collected will allow the nation to measure its progress against continental benchmarks. By empowering participants to analyze innovation trends, AUDA-NEPAD aims to ensure that scientific research directly informs policy decisions that combat instability and promote economic growth.
The training continues throughout the week, positioning Chad as a focal point for African innovation and strategic foresight.
