In a chilling escalation of violence against civic actors, Mustapha Sadiq, a state officer for the civic-tech organization BudgIT, was left with severe head and body injuries after a group of armed men stormed his residence on the night of April 4, 2026.

The attackers, identified as a group of five men armed with machetes, reportedly broke into Sadiq’s home under the cover of darkness. While the assailants attempted to steal the officer’s vehicle, they were unsuccessful, ultimately fleeing the scene after inflicting life-threatening wounds on the victim.

A Targeted Assault or Violent Crime?

The nature of the attack has sparked immediate concerns regarding the safety of those involved in public transparency and accountability. BudgIT has confirmed that the case is being treated with utmost seriousness, particularly given Sadiq’s role in tracking public projects and holding the government accountable in what is described as a volatile environment.

“This was a deeply disturbing and unacceptable act of violence. We are asking the police to explore if this has to do with his work of holding the government accountable in a very volatile environment and the continuous challenges with the closing civic space,” stated Vahyala Kwaga, Country Director of BudgIT.

While the motive remains under investigation, the organization noted that the severity and surgical nature of the injuries raise questions about whether the attack was a botched robbery or a targeted attempt to silence a civic whistleblower.

Demand for Police Action

BudgIT has officially lodged a complaint with the Nigerian Police, demanding a transparent and swift investigation to identify the perpetrators. The organization emphasized that such acts of violence undermine public confidence and signal a dangerous trend for citizens and activists alike.

“No individual should be subjected to such violence under any circumstances,” Kwaga added, calling on authorities to take decisive steps to bolster security and respond more effectively to violent crimes in the region.

Recovery and Commitment

Mustapha Sadiq is currently receiving urgent medical attention for his injuries. Despite the attack, BudgIT reaffirmed its commitment to its mission of fiscal transparency, stating they will stand by their officer throughout his recovery.

The organization is urging the Katsina State government and security agencies to ensure that this incident does not persist without consequence, as the gory nature of the assault has sent shockwaves through the local community and the broader civil society network.
