The African Union is set to convene the 17th High-Level Retreat on the Promotion of Peace, Security, and Stability in Africa from May 21 to 22, 2026, in Libreville, bringing together top African and international peace actors to strengthen conflict prevention and resolution efforts across the continent.
The retreat, organised by the African Union Commission, will be held under the theme: “Powering Ceasefires, National Dialogue and Reconciliation for Durable Peace.”
According to the Commission, the gathering will assemble AU High Representatives, Special Envoys, members of the Panel of the Wise, representatives of the United Nations, Regional Economic Communities and Mechanisms, as well as experts and stakeholders involved in peacebuilding initiatives across Africa.
Focus on Durable Peace and Conflict Resolution
The retreat will be convened under the auspices of H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and is expected to provide a platform for discussions on ceasefire arrangements, reconciliation processes and long-term political strategies required to achieve sustainable peace on the continent.
In a statement released ahead of the meeting, the Commission said the retreat would allow participants to “exchange experiences and strengthen collective responses to conflict prevention, management and resolution in Africa.”
The AU noted that deliberations would focus on the implementation of ceasefire agreements, inclusive peace processes and the role of governance in stabilising conflict-affected countries.
Women, Youth and Former Leaders to Shape Discussions
The two-day programme will feature high-level plenary sessions, leadership exchanges and spotlight conversations involving former African Heads of State and senior diplomats.
Discussions are also expected to spotlight the contributions of women and youth in peacebuilding through initiatives such as FemWise-Africa and the WiseYouth Network.
Former leaders participating in the retreat are expected to share reflections on mediation, governance and African-led peace efforts aimed at addressing persistent security challenges across the continent.
AU, UN to Deepen Strategic Cooperation
Ahead of the main retreat, the AU will host a series of preparatory engagements, including the Statutory Meeting of the Panel of the Wise on May 19 and a closed-door meeting between the Chairperson of the Commission and AU Special Representatives on May 20.
The programme will also include the 4th Joint Retreat of AU and UN Special Representatives and Envoys, where both organisations are expected to discuss stronger strategic coordination in peace and security operations.
According to the AU, the joint session will focus on integrated analysis, coordinated responses and enhanced collaboration under the Joint AU-UN Framework for Enhanced Partnership in Peace and Security.
Key Recommendations Expected
The retreat is expected to conclude with the adoption of key recommendations aimed at strengthening the AU’s mediation, preventive diplomacy and conflict management structures.
Senior officials from the Government of Gabon, representatives of AU member states, regional blocs, think tanks, development partners and officials of the African Union Commission are expected to attend the gathering.
