The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Engineer Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has denied reports suggesting that he consulted with Governor Seyi Makinde or other traditional rulers on the rotational chairmanship of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
In a statement released on Friday, January 15, 2026, and signed by Bode Durojaiye, Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, the palace clarified that no meeting took place between the Alaafin and the governor, nor did the monarch endorse any rotational leadership among the three imperial rulers of the state, which include the Olubadan of Ibadanland and the Soun of Ogbomosho.
“The Alaafin did not hold any meeting with either the State Governor or any of the two traditional rulers mentioned above,” the statement read. “Also, the Alaafin did not tell the Governor or make a categorical statement on his endorsement of rotational chairmanship among the three traditional rulers in the State.”
The palace further noted that the Alaafin and the Oyo community had already communicated their position on the State Council of Obas and Chiefs in a memorandum delivered to Governor Makinde by the Oyo Council of Elders.
The statement reinforced the Alaafin’s authority as the Paramount Ruler of Oyo Kingdom and Superior Head of Yorubaland, asserting that all matters relating to the State Council would reflect the consensus of the traditional institution.
